10 Highly Nutritious Food For Your Teeth

By Bolatito Mayungbo

It’s December already! But you already knew that.

Tis’ the season to make merry and be jolly; the time for the Detty December lists - aromatic cuisines with hard-to-pronounce names and money draining (fun) activities. December comes with lights, warmth, carols, happiness and all types of meals and sweets (avoid them!).

This season does come with loads of enjoyment, but some of the things you take can impact negatively on your dental health too. So, I'm here to tell you that while you’re “chopping the life of your head” this holiday season, please don’t forget to protect your teeth.

Here are 10 highly nutritious foods to ensure you don’t do your teeth “detty” this December

1. Milk; A dairy product that contains Calcium and Phosphorus needed to protect the enamel and build strong bones and teeth.

2. Yoghurt; Another dairy product, yoghurt also contains Calcium that helps strengthen teeth. It can also stimulate saliva production thereby protecting the teeth from bacteria.

3. Carrots; Raw vegetables like carrots help maintain the health of your teeth due to their gum stimulating properties

4. Apples; Apples also stimulate the gums and they reduce the rate at which bacteria that cause cavities build up.

5. Fish; Fish like tuna are good sources of vitamin D which helps to build strong teeth and bones.

6. Nuts; There is increased saliva production when you chew nuts. This saliva neutralizes cavity-causing bacteria. Some nuts like almonds and walnuts also contain nutrients like calcium, potassium, vitamin E and zinc which are good for the teeth.

7. Tea; Black and green teas (not Milo) contain polyphenol. Polyphenol is responsible for decreasing the growth rate of cavity-causing bacteria. It can also help fight bad breath.

8. Onions; Raw onions contain antibacterial sulfur compounds that can kill bacteria on your teeth. Please make sure to brush after.

9. Leafy Greens; With their high calcium content, they help build tooth enamel.

10. Cheese; It has a high calcium content. It helps to restore enamel and boost dental health.

So, swap the multiple sugary beverages and sweets for pure yoghurt and carrots this period (and beyond, of course). To paraphrase and translate a Yoruba saying; Christmas would go, teeth would remain. Do what you wish with this information, and, HAPPY HOLIDAYS.
